Colorless, transparent and combustible liquid with a smell of ethanol, being the isomer of n-propyl alcohol. It is soluble in water, alcohols, ether, benzene, chloroform etc. It can dissolve alkaloid, rubber, shellac, colophony, synthetic resin etc., and form azeotrope with water; it is not soluble in saline solution.It is combustible under common temperature.
Application fields:
1. Used for producing medicine, cosmetics, plastics, spicery, coating etc.;
2. Used as a chemical raw material in producing acetone, hydrogen peroxide, valerone, isopropamide etc.;
3. Used as the solvent of rubber, coating, shellac, alkaloid etc.Production of aluminum isopropoxide, coating, ink, aerosol, extraction agent etc.;
4. Used as antifreezer, cleaning agent, dispersant for paint production, degreaser, and fixative, diluent and dehydrant in dyeing industry, etc.
Health hazard:
High concentration vapor has anesthetic effect and has irritation effect on the mucous membrane of eyes and respiratory tract, and would hurt the retina and optic nerve.
Oral ingestion of the isopropyl alcohol could cause nausea, vomit, bellyache, diarrhea, drowsiness, coma and even death.
Long term exposure of skin to the isopropyl alcohol could cause dry and rhagades of skin.
Personal protection:
Engineering control: keep sealed during production process, ventilated thoroughly. Safe shower and eyes cleaning device should be provided.
Respiratory system protection: wear a filter mask in case of working under high concentration.
Eye protection: wear safety goggles in case of working under high concentration.
Body protection: wear anti-static work clothes.
Hand protection: wear rubber gloves.
Other protection: smoking is strictly forbidden in workplace. Keep good sanitary habits.
Emergency treatment:
Contact with skin: take off the clothes got tainted and rinse the skin with suds and clear water thoroughly.
Contact with eyes: lift up the eyelid and rinse with flowing water or normal saline. Get medical attention.
Inhalation: leave the site quickly to a place with fresh air. If necessary, give oxygen therapy or artificial respiration. Get medical attention.
Mistaking: drink plenty of warm water and induce vomiting. Conduct gastrolavage.Get medical attention.
Fire-fighting measures:
Hazardous characteristics: combustible; its vapor and air can form explosive mixture; opt to combustion and explosion if encountering open flame or high temperature. It will produce violent reaction when contacts with oxidant. The heated container has a risk of explosion in fire.Its vapor is heavier than the air and can spread in lower position to quite far place, and catches on fire when encounters open flame.
Hazardous combustion products: CO, CO2.
Method of extinguishing: move the container to an open position. Spray water to cool down the container on fire site until the fire is put out. In the event that the container on the fire site changes color or some sound is heard from the safety pressure relief device, evacuate immediately.
Extinguishing agent: alcohol resistant foam, dry powder, carbon dioxide and sandy soil.
Leakage treatment: evacuate people to the safe area and isolate them immediately and strictly control the entry to and exit from the site.
Cut off the fire source, and the processing staff must wear a self-supporting positive pressure respirator and anti-static work clothes.
Cut off leakage source as much as possible.Avoid the liquid flowing into sewage, flood drainage trench and other limited space.
Small amount of leakage: absorb by sandy soil or other incombustible materials, or rinse and dilute with large amount of water and drain to wastewater system.
Large amount of leakage: build an embankment or dig a pit to take the liquid in; cover with foam;Pump the liquid into a dedicated container by an explosion-proof pump, and then recover or transfer it to the waste treatment place.
